INTRODUCTION With life expectancy increasing, the segment of the population entering the “Third Age” is expanding fast. By 2030, one quarter of the population of the developed world will be over 65, and within Western Europe, nearly half the population will be over 50 years of age. According to Business Week in January 2005, Global Ageing is not just found in Europe, Japan and developed countries; China and other emerging economies are ageing fast too.
The Global Ageing market is relatively untapped target market. Given that the maturing seniors that are part of the post-war generation are more highly educated than their parents, more widely traveled and also more affluent, it is expected that their lifestyles will demand new services and products.
WHY A NATIONAL DESIGN CENTRE? Singapore too, faces an ageing population and it is timely that our nation sets up its first >60 Design Centre, pronounced Greater than 60, to meet her needs. At the Centre, we will be studying the ageing process and issues, to provide design ideas and solutions that will make the ageing lifestyle a creative and an exciting one.
